Butterfly Song

Melanesia has a rich musical history. We join the musical icons of this culture with our own, to strike a revolutionary music collaboration. It is a story of hope that follows an extraordinary musical journey.

Featuring Musicians: George Telek, David Bridie, Lee Scratch Perry, Lisa Gerrard, Luka Bloom, Jim Moginie, Phil Wales, John Butler, Xavier Rudd, Richard Thompson.

In 1994 Rabaul was completely destroyed by the violent eruption of one of its three neighbouring volcanos. Rabaul was much more than a provincial capital and museum of colonial architecture. Rabaul was the spiritual home of Stringband music, a uniquely Melanesian genre that fuses traditional music with intricate guitar stylings. It owes much to ancient culture whilst drawing on influences as diverse as country, reggae, rock n’ roll and even traditional Japanese sounds.Extremely lyrical in nature, it conveys the stories of daily life, history and most often, love. At night, throughout Melanesia, people gather in villages to sing and dance and be swept up in the rhythm and joy of the unique that is STRINGBAND.

The demise of it’s spiritual home has been compounded by a PNG music industry dominated by just one record label that seems determined to homogenise Papuan music with generic Asian pop. Despite it’s continuing popularity, the once vibrant Stringband recording industry has disappeared.

Drawing on a long and proud history of survival against the odds the local Stringband musicians have determined to rectify the problem, to rebuild the PNG music industry to it’s former glory.

To this end, internationally acclaimed artist George Telek has enlisted the help of his long time friend and collaborator David Bridie. Telek and Bridie share a deep, natural friendship that has spanned well over a decade. Together they have embarked on international tours and crafted critically acclaimed albums. They have decided to assemble an all-star cast of Papuan and Western musicians to collaborate on an album and tour that alerts the world to this exciting, soulful music called Stringband.
